Those Crazy Americans

"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." -Oscar Wilde

Today we went back to Mahidol University for some class time! First, we had a wonderful presentation by Mam about the Sirindhorn National Medical Rehab Center, which some of us will be doing clinicals at. The Center has just started a Music Therapy department for the many different patients and it is exciting to hear about the growth of music therapy here in Thailand. Only seven years ago did Mam discover that music therapy existed!

After the presentation, Russell came to bid us farewell. He told us about his journey as a music therapist and really inspired all of us to keep doing what we do, and do it well. It's hard to believe that we were able to spend so much time with the famous Russell Hilliard, the man that practically invented music therapy in hospice care. We were very sad to see him go after our amazing week together. My favorite thing that he said was "it's all about their (the patient's) experience."

Immediately after I joined Ohm in a session with a 4 yr old with Autism. Regardless of the fact that I had no idea what was going to happen the session went very well. The client stared at me a lot, as if to say "why is this blonde girl here?" and he was adorable. Can't wait for another session with him next week!

The afternoon was filled with more sessions that others participated in and the rest of us observed. I feel like I am learning a ton just from seeing music therapy so much (the USU MT program really needs to have observation requirements). We also had some articles to read as homework and I wrote session notes.

At dinner time Karn took us to get Mahidol shirts from the campus store, and then we got on a trolley to go to the street market. Rayna and I hunted down and ate all the marinated meat on a stick we could find. Then, we had dessert at the Cat Cafe!

Literally a cafe where there are cats walking around for you to pet/play with.

We spent a little too much time at the cat cafe, taking pictures and playing with the cats. Who would have thought we would be so entertained by a place like this? The owners of the cafe were very kind and gracious, but I'm sure they thought we were pretty silly. By the time we left, it was about 7:45 PM, and the last shuttle that takes you from the university to our apartment comes at 8:00. We literally ran, in the rain, from the cat cafe, across Mahidol University, over the sketchy bridge, and through a live music concert in order to get to the shuttle stop. We made it at exactly 8:00 and the shuttle came five minutes later. Thank goodness for Thai time!

We'll never forget the time we almost missed the shuttle home because we stayed out too late, not partying, but at the Cat Cafe.

  1. Car Cafe sounds kind of freaky. Like taking my mom there would be hilarious.
